The Tradition of Raising Livestock Continues at the Fair

Ever wonder who the students are that show the animals at the Fair? We'd like you to meet Sam M. She raised a market lamb for FFA and showed her horse at the Contra Costa County Fair this past summer. She even made it in to FFA master showmanship with her horse. She recently graduated from high school and plans to study agriculture business in fall of 2011. Read about her experiences with livestock, what she thinks about the Fair, and views on a wayward sea lion. Fair: How long have you been raising livestock? Sam: Last year was my first year raising livestock, but I’ve worked with them since I was 9 when I started 4-H. F: What is most challenging about raising animals and what is most rewarding? S: Challenging: was trying to gain weight on my lamb "Shotgun" Rewarding: really just showing and placing well in market. F: How about horses? How long have you been showing and/or riding? S: My family has always had horses and I started showing when I was about 8. Currently I've been barrel racing on both my horses which I also ride in gymkhana at fair and I am a member and Co-Caption of the Delta Darling Rodeo Drill team. F: What are your favorite events with horse? S: I love Showmanship and Barrels. F: How did you get involved with FFA? S: I transferred schools during my senior year to do FFA at Liberty as Freedom didn’t have it. F: Have you always lived in Knightsen? What did you think about the sea lion the other day? (read more about that story on the Contra Costa Times website.) S: Yes I have. I was pretty shocked that it made it here out of all places it could have gone! F: What is your favorite part about the Fair? S: EVERYTHING!! I love staying the night in 4-H camp and getting up to feed animals and being with all my friends it’s my favorite time of the year Pictured: Sam and her fair lamb "Shotgun" at the school farm Be sure to join us as “The Tradition Continues” in 2011 at the Contra Costa County Fair. Platinum artists Great White free with fair admission

Like the fearsome, deadly denizen of the deep that shares its name, Great White knows something about survival of the fittest. The Southern California blues Hard Rock band, Great White, first took a bite out of the rock scene in 1984 and since then has achieved worldwide success, encompassing sales of over six million records. They received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Hard Rock Performance for the song "Once Bitten, Twice Shy" and earned a double platinum certification for the album “…Twice Shy”.

Since reuniting in January 2007 to perform a benefit concert, Great White has moved forward releasing their first album in 8 years, “Back To The Rhythm” in July 2007, and marking GREAT WHITE’s 25th Anniversary. “It’s just like old times,” stated lead singer, Jack Russell. “There’s a bond that forms between people that is very special. I’ve missed my friends.”

“Back To The Rhythm”, featuring original members Jack Russell (vocals), Mark Kendall (lead Guitar), Audie Desbrow (drums), Michael Lardie (Guitar/keyboards) and Sean McNabb (bass), was mixed, produced, and engineered by band member Michael Lardie. “The new songs sound fresh to me, very Great White, but with an approach of what we sound like in a live performance situation,” explained Michael Lardie. “Kendall and I are having fun channeling our Stones roots and playing off each other in the Richards/Woods tradition.”

Great White has been touring heavily since releasing “Back To The Rhythm,” enjoying huge fan support. And in May 2008, bassist Scott Snyder was welcomed as a new permanent member of Great White. The band is now working on new material and beginning studio work on their next upcoming release.
Get a taste of Platinum artists Great White signature style of rock -- free with fair admission -- at 8pm on Saturday, June 5.

Skynnyn Lynnyrd show free with fair admission

Skynnyn Lynnyrd began to take form at the very moment of the tragic crash that ended the lives of Ronnie VanZant, Steve and Cassie Gains, as well as Dean Kilpatrick. An American saga ended on that day in 1977, leaving a void that begs to be filled by millions of fans all over the world.

It's about the music... real, honest and often edgy. Skynnyn Lynnyrd has stripped the music of the legendary band down to its finest detail and re-assembled it... not as a cover but as it was intended. Every nuance and detail is pursued with passion and determination, to be performed as if by the original band.

Skynnyn Lynnyrd is the "Reloaded" Lynyrd Skynyrd. The parity is remarkable...so much so that one may be inclined to believe there is some divine intervention going on here; as if guided by the spirit of the original band members who departed so long ago. While there will never be another Lynyrd Skynyrd, Skynnyn Lynnyrd is Lynyrd Skynyrd - - - RELOADED. Check it out y'all at the Contra Costa County Fair on Friday, June 4 starting at 8:30pm. Free with Fair Admission!

We all remember the sixties…

A time of conflict and of coming of age. A time of youth and of love, of peace and of innocence, and of the wild and wonderful music that set the background for our lives and for the generations who followed.

The amazing vocals of the early California Beach Boys made us all dream of warm sand, fast cars and hitting the surf. Then there was the British invasion that began with the Beatles in early 1964 with "I Want to Hold Your Hand" had us all growing our hair and rushing out to by miniskirts and go-go boots as many other English groups continued to rock the music scene.

The hippies of San Francisco Haight-Ashbury days spoke to the world of peace, happiness, flowers and free love while thousands of similar free spirits on the East Coast gathered together in a little town they called Woodstock.

The Motown Sound rocked Detroit and Music was indeed the King that united a nation. There has never been any question that music was at its best from 1963 to 1969. The music of the 60s holds a special memory for those who grew up with it. It was music you could sing along with, music you could dance to, music you fell in love with.
Now, one group brings all the memorable music from the 60s together for you at the Contra Costa County Fair! Experience “60s Summer of Love” on Thursday, June 3 at 6pm and again at 8pm on the Pavilion Stage at the Fair. Free with Fair Admission!

Fair Queen 2010

Do you have what it takes to be the 2010 Contra Costa County Fair Queen? Believe it or not, the 2010 Contra Costa County Fair is just around the corner. Every year the Fair crowns one of Contra Costa County’s lovely, poised, and energetic women as the new Fair queen, to serve as hostess during the Fair.

The Fair Queen reins over the Fair events from June 3rd – June 6th, 2010 and makes special appearances at many community events.

The Fair Queen competition is not a pageant; it is a panel interview process to determine which applicant will best represent the youth of the county. The contest is open to women between the ages of 18 and 25 who live in Contra Costa County and are not married. The Fair Queen will win cash, hold the title of 2010 Contra Costa County Fair Queen, and have lots of fun!

Call (925) 757-4400 or email Email info@ccfair.org to receive an application. The deadline for applications is Monday, March 29, 2009. Queen interviews and selection will be announced soon. Be sure to join the Fair Queen at the Contra Costa County Fair for “Old fashion Fun!”

Be A Part Of The Fair

Corndogs, funnel cakes, livestock, preserves, carnival rides… yup, the Contra Costa County Fair is right around the corner. Be a part of “Old Fashion Fun” this year and showcase your work! Bake your best cookies, take your best picture, create the best scrapbook page ever, and nurture your prized plant - then enter it into one of the Fair’s contests and competitions.

There is something for everyone! Special contests include You’ve Got Mail contest – decorate a mail box with a barn theme, Recycled art -- create a masterpiece using recycled items found around your home (ex. cans, nails, wire etc.), and Marshmallow creation -- create an imaginative farm animal, a cow or maybe a rooster, using marshmallows as the main structure. There are too many to mention. Check the special contests section of the online exhibitor handbook.

There are traditional exhibits as well from preserved foods to homemade wine and from quilts to outdoor landscapes. Kids will enjoy showing off their Lego creations, short stories, paintings, photographs, scrapbook pages, jams and jellies, needlework, and so much more. Don’t forget my personal favorite: Plein Aire Painting on Saturday, June 5. For a Complete list, check the online exhibitor handbook.

So, wait are you waiting for? Sign up already!
